BharatGPT: A Multilingual Generative AI System

India is planning to develop an AI system that can be used in multiple languages and capture the cultural heritage of the country. The system is being called BharatGPT, and it is backed by a number of government departments as well as private companies, including Reliance group’s Jio Infocomm and Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare Private Ltd. A public-private partnership will be created to develop the system.

The system will use a large language model (LLM), which is a type of AI model that is trained on a massive amount of text data. This allows the system to understand and generate text, including in multiple languages. It will use Bharatiya linguistic and cultural heritage, and will incorporate technological innovation.

The minister of state for electronics and information technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, said the project will help advance AI capabilities while also promoting Indian culture. He said that the government is focused on developing AI systems that will be inclusive and accessible to all.

Ganesh Ramakrishnan, a professor of computer science who is leading the project, said that BharatGPT will try to combine the best aspects of India’s linguistic diversity and heritage with the latest advances in technology. He said the system will be able to generate Indian-centric content that is relevant to the needs and aspirations of local communities.

The organizations involved in the development of BharatGPT will contribute their expertise in various areas, including artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and cultural heritage. The system is expected to be completed in the next two to three years.

Once it is completed, BharatGPT will be used in a variety of applications, including education, healthcare, and customer service. It could also be used to create new forms of entertainment and media.
