Samsung Shakes Up Memory Division: New Structure, AI Factory, and HBM Focus

1–2 minutes

Is Samsung gearing up for a new era of memory chip dominance? The tech giant just announced a significant organizational restructuring aimed at bolstering its competitiveness in memory semiconductors and artificial intelligence. This move signals a renewed focus on innovation and a strategic push to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

## Memory Development Division: A New Control Tower

Samsung is establishing a dedicated Memory Development Division within its Semiconductor (DS) Division. This new entity will act as a central hub, overseeing the entire lifecycle of memory semiconductor development, encompassing both DRAM and NAND flash technologies. Hwang Sang-jun, the VP who spearheaded the HBM redesign, will lead the new division. Industry experts believe this move is designed to create a more agile and responsive structure to tackle the increasingly complex challenges in memory technology, especially in the high-bandwidth memory (HBM) arena.

## HBM Team Integration and AI Factory Ambitions

Interestingly, the HBM development team, initially formed as a separate unit last year to recapture market leadership from SK Hynix, will be integrated into the DRAM Development Division. This integration suggests growing confidence in Samsung’s HBM technology, particularly after securing a deal to supply its 5th-generation HBM (HBM3E) to NVIDIA.

Beyond memory, Samsung is also setting its sights on AI-driven manufacturing. The company is establishing a Digital Twin Center under the Global Manufacturing & Infrastructure Division. This center will be instrumental in building an “AI factory,” applying AI to every facet of semiconductor design and production. Leveraging NVIDIA’s Omniverse platform, Samsung aims to create a virtual replica of its manufacturing environment to optimize processes and accelerate innovation. The newly formed center will spearhead the R&D efforts for this ambitious project. This move reinforces Samsung’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and solidifying its position as a global leader. The changes are expected to be completed this week, with global strategy meetings to take place next month.
